More than just a plant

History

The Dracaena, also known as the Dragon's Blood Tree, has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Originally from Africa, Asia and Central America, this plant is named after the Greek word “drakaina,” which means “female dragon”. This refers to the red resin some species secrete - formerly known as “dragon's blood” - which has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and as a dye. This mysterious origin makes the Dracaena not only a beautiful, but also an intriguing addition to your plant collection.

Care tips for a healthy Dracaena

One of the biggest advantages of the Dracaena is that it requires very little maintenance. Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can enjoy this beautiful plant for years. It only needs a sip of water if the soil feels dry and feels at home in indirect light. Have a busy week and forget about her for a while? No worries, she forgives you! The only thing she really doesn't like is drowning in a pot that's too wet. So by all means, leave the watering can for a while.

Here are some care tips to keep your Dracaena, or Plant of the Month for February, healthy and happy:

  • Light: The Dracaena likes bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can burn the leaves, while too little light slows growth.
  • Water: Allow the top layer of potting soil to dry out before re-watering. Too wet soil can lead to root rot. Start by watering once a week. Is the soil still too wet? Then scale down to once every 2 weeks.
  • Temperature: The ideal temperature does not go below 15°C. So protect the plant from drafts and cold temperatures.
  • Nutrition: In spring and summer, give a light dose of plant nutrition monthly. In autumn and winter you can skip this.
