Air-Purifying Plant of the Month: October 2025

October is the month when the days grow shorter and we spend more and more time indoors. That’s exactly when it’s nice to keep the air in your home fresh and healthy. Our Air-Purifying Plant of the Month, the Spathiphyllum, is excellent for this. This elegant and flowering plant, better known as the peace lily, is not only an attractive addition but is also known as one of the most powerful air purifiers in the Air So Pure range.

Stylish and classic

You’ll recognize the Spathiphyllum immediately by its deep green, glossy leaves and the striking white flowers that stand out. Or rather, flowers? Actually, they’re bracts! But they’re commonly referred to as flowers.

Those white flowers resemble spoons, hence the nickname “Spoon Plant.” This graceful plant fits into both modern and classic interiors and provides a fresh and serene look all year round. In October, when nature outside is becoming increasingly barren, the Spathiphyllum brings some atmosphere and health indoors.

The Spathiphyllum is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America and parts of Southeast Asia. In the wild, it grows on the shady forest floor, beneath the dense canopy of tall trees. Thanks to this natural environment, the plant is accustomed to high humidity, filtered light, and a constant temperature. It is precisely this background that explains why the Spathiphyllum thrives so well in our living rooms.

Air-purifying hero

What makes the Spathiphyllum truly special is its proven air-purifying ability. Research conducted by NASA as early as the 1980s demonstrated that this plant effectively filters harmful substances such as benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from the air. Since then, countless other studies have confirmed this finding. All plants at Air So Pure have been extensively tested by an independent research agency. Are you buying a Spathiphyllum from Air So Pure? Then you can be sure that it’s extra effective at purifying the air!

While you enjoy a cup of tea on the couch, the Spathiphyllum quietly works to improve the air quality in your home. Do you spend a lot of time at the office or in the classroom? The Spathiphyllum is a great houseplant for those situations, too. Having air-purifying plants around offers various health benefits. For example, they can alleviate health complaints and improve concentration and creativity! That makes the Spathiphyllum ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and workspaces.

Care tips for a healthy Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily)

A major advantage of the Spathiphyllum is how easy it is to care for. This plant is low-maintenance and lets you know when it’s thirsty: if it doesn’t get enough water, its leaves will droop slightly. Give it a drink, and it will perk right back up within a few hours. Place it in a bright spot, but avoid direct, harsh sunlight. It also tolerates a bit of shade quite well, making it suitable for virtually any interior.

The Spathiphyllum, or Air So Pure Plant of the Month December, is a very simple plant, and with proper care, you can enjoy it for months.

  • Light: Place the plant in a spot with indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist. Since the Spathiphyllum also survives in swamps in the wild, the plant can tolerate “wet feet” quite well, but try not to make a habit of this. If the Spathiphyllum is thirsty, it will let you know by letting its leaves droop. A good watering, and within a short time the Spathiphyllum will look beautiful again.
  • Humidity: Since the Spathiphyllum naturally comes from humid areas, it appreciates high humidity. Spray the leaves regularly with water to prevent dehydration.
  • Nutrition: The Spoon Plant is most active during the summer and therefore needs a little extra care during this time. So, give the plant a small amount of plant food once a month during the summer.
  • Pruning: Remove yellow or brown leaves and flowers to keep the plant healthy and encourage new growth. Trim the flower as low as possible near the roots.

Is the Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) poisonous?

If you have pets or children, it’s naturally good to know whether a plant is toxic or not. The Spathiphyllum is beautiful and hardy, but can be toxic to pets and people if ingested. The leaves and flowers contain certain substances that can cause irritation of the mouth, throat, and stomach. So keep the plant out of reach of pets, and you can still enjoy this beautiful plant every day!
