Air-Purifying Plant of the Month for August 2025

The sun is shining brightly and temperatures are rising. It's time to announce the Air-Purifying Plant of the Month for August: the Livistona, also known as the Fan Palm.

What is the origin of the Livistona?

The Livistona, Air-Purifying Plant of the Month for August, originates from Southeast Asia and Australia. In nature, it grows into a sturdy palm with a slender trunk and beautiful leaves. The Livistona grows there along rivers, in damp areas of the forest, and sometimes even on the coast. Nowadays, the Livistona is mainly found in countries such as Sri Lanka, where our Air So Pure Livistona also comes from.

In its natural habitat, the Livistona can grow to a height of around 10 meters. The trunk remains slender and usually does not exceed 20 to 25 cm in diameter. In your living room, the Livistona will remain much more compact, especially in limited light. In addition, you can buy the Livistona in various sizes, so you can decide for yourself whether you want a small palm tree in your home or a large eye-catcher.

Grower of the Livistona

The Air-Purifying Plant of the Month for August, the Livistona, is cultivated by our member Spaargaren van Doorn. They are known for their sustainable approach. For example, they use recycled fertilizer and coconut dust, and they produce hand-turned earthenware pots. In addition to plants, the company also offers its product line of ceramics and pottery, imported from Sri Lanka. These direct imports leverage the knowledge of local people and provide numerous opportunities for the workers there.

Whether you want to put a small Livistona in your bedroom or a large, striking Livistona in your (home) office, you will find a Livistona to suit every space at Air So Pure! Air-purifying properties

The Livistona is part of the Air So Pure range, which means it purifies the air. Like other plants in this selection, the Livistona helps to improve indoor air quality. Harmful substances such as benzene and formaldehyde are absorbed by the leaves and converted into oxygen.

This air-purifying process is completely natural and constant. You may not notice it immediately, but in the long term, air-purifying plants such as the Livistona contribute to a fresher, more pleasant living environment. Of course, ventilation remains the most important factor.

How do you care for the Livistona?

The Livistona is a sensitive plant, but with the right care, you can enjoy this palm for a long time! It does not like to be dry, prefers no direct sunlight, and likes a little fertilizer now and then in the summer. Below you will find all the tips for the Air-Purifying Plant of the Month for August, the Livistona:

  • Light: Place the Livistona in a spot with plenty of light, but avoid direct sunlight. Too much sun can burn its leaves.
  • Water: The Livistona does not like to be dry. The potting soil should therefore always be slightly moist, but make sure that the roots are not standing in water. In summer, it needs more water than in winter, and you can safely water it twice a week.
  • Fertilizer: During spring and summer, give plant food once a month. In winter, you can skip this.
  • Humidity: The Livistona likes high humidity. Regular spraying can prevent the leaf edges from turning brown.

Also, make sure there is enough space: the leaves can spread out widely and need air to stay beautiful.

Is the Livistona (Fan palm) poisonous?

No, the Livistona is not poisonous to humans or pets. This means you can place it in your home without any worries, even if you have children, cats, or dogs. However, it is important to remember that it is not suitable for consumption. Beautiful to look at, but not to eat.
