Air-Purifying Plant of the Month January 2026

A fresh start has begun. Time to introduce the Air-Purifying Plant of the Month for January. We’re starting the year with a strong and reliable plant: the Dracaena. With its striking appearance, easy care, and powerful air-purifying qualities, it’s a great addition to any space. Read on and discover everything about the Dracaena.

History and characteristics

The Dracaena, also known as the Dragon Tree, has a rich history that goes back thousands of years. It originates from Africa, Asia, and Central America, and its name comes from the Greek word drakaina, meaning “female dragon.” This refers to the red resin some species produce, once known as “dragon’s blood.”

Plants bring life into your home, but the Dracaena does more than that. It helps purify the air and supports your concentration and creativity. While you go about your day, it filters harmful substances such as formaldehyde and benzene from the air, just like all other Air So Pure plants. The result? A fresher, healthier indoor environment, without any extra effort. Perfect for working from home or relaxing evenings on the couch.

Wherever you place it, the Dracaena fits in beautifully. In a clean, minimalist interior or a more colourful setting. For example, choose the Dracaena Marginata or the Dracaena Janet Lind.

Care tips for a healthy Dracaena

When you say “Dracaena,” you're talking about a rock-solid plant! A major advantage of the Dracaena is that it requires very little care. So even if you don't have a green thumb, you can enjoy this beautiful plant for years to come!

It only needs a little water when the soil feels dry and thrives in indirect light. The one thing it really can’t stand is being waterlogged in a pot that’s too wet.

Here are some care tips to keep your Dracaena—January’s Plant of the Month—healthy and happy:

  • Light: The Dracaena likes bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can burn the leaves, while too little light slows growth.
  • Water: Allow the top layer of potting soil to dry out before re-watering. Too wet soil can lead to root rot. Start by watering once a week. Is the soil still too wet? Then scale down to once every 2 weeks.
  • Temperature: The ideal temperature does not go below 15°C. So protect the plant from drafts and cold temperatures.
  • Nutrition: In spring and summer, give a light dose of plant nutrition monthly. In autumn and winter you can skip this.

Is the Dracaena poisonous?

Yes, the Dracaena is slightly toxic to pets such as cats and dogs. You can easily resolve this by placing the plant out of their reach. For humans, the plant is generally safe, although the sap can cause skin irritation in some people.
