Discover the versatile Dracaena
In the world of houseplants, the Dracaena is known as one of the most versatile and low-maintenance species. But what makes the Dracaena special is its strong ability to purify the air in the home, classroom, and office. This month, we highlight the Dracaena as the June Air Purifying Plant of the Month and discover why the Dracaena is a must-have for any plant lover.
A brief history
The Dracaena, also known as the dragon (blood) tree, is native to Africa, Asia, and Central America. The name “Dracaena” is derived from the Greek word “drakaina,” meaning female dragon. This refers to the resin some species produce, which is reddish and used to be known as 'dragon's blood.' This nickname comes from old stories and legends that tell that the resin of the plant is the blood of dragons. This gives the Dracaena an extra touch of mystery, making it even more special.

Verzorgingstips voor de Dracaena
The Dracaena is very easy to care for. To enjoy your Dracaena as long as possible, we give some tips to keep your Dracaena healthy and happy:
- Light: Most Dracaena species like indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves, so place the plant in an area with filtered light.
- Water: Allow the top layer of potting soil to dry out before re-watering. Too much water can lead to root rot, so make sure the plant is not left standing in water.
- Temperature: The Dracaena likes warm temperatures between 18°C and 27°C. Make sure the plant is not exposed to drafts or cold temperatures below 15°C.
- Nutrition: During the growing season (spring and summer), give a light liquid fertilizer monthly. In autumn and winter, fertilization is usually not necessary.
Is the Dracaena poisonous?
Yes, the Dracaena is mildly toxic to pets such as cats and dogs. It contains saponins, a type of chemical compound that can be harmful to these animals if they eat parts of the plant. To protect your pets, it is wise to keep the Dracaena out of their reach.
Although the Dracaena is toxic to pets, it is less dangerous to humans. However, the sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.
The Dracaena and Feng Shui
In Feng Shui philosophy, the Dracaena is often associated with positive energy and balance. Especially in June, when the biggest transition from spring to summer takes place, it is important to create a good balance. Placing a Dracaena in the corner of a room can help to stimulate chi (life energy) and repel negative energies. Especially the Dracaena Marginata is seen as a symbol of growth and strength.
