Air Purifying Plant of the Month December

A blooming addition with the Spathiphyllum

This December month we turn our attention to a true champion in purifying the air: the Spathiphyllum. As the air-purifying plant of the Month, the Spathiphyllum has many benefits. Also known as the Spoon Plant or Peace Lily, this elegant, flowering plant is not only pleasing to the eye but also a powerful addition to creating a healthy and fresh living environment.

Origin and significance

The Spathiphyllum, belonging to the family Araceae, originated in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and the American tropical rainforest. Its name is derived from the Greek "spatha," which stands for "spath" or "flower spad," and "phyllon," meaning "leaf." This name refers to the distinctive flowering spad surrounded by a white bract, which gives the plant a unique characteristic.

The nickname "Spoon Plant" can be traced to the shape of the bracts. The nickname "Peace Lily" owes the Spathiphyllum to its graceful appearance and calming properties. In many cultures, this plant symbolizes peace, purity, and harmony. Like the Phlebodium and Calathea, the Spathiphyllum has evolved into a popular choice for houseplant lovers worldwide, thanks to its beautiful white flowers and strong air-purifying ability. So the December Plant of the Month is truly a gift for yourself or someone else, perfect for the holidays!

Caring Tips for the Spathiphyllum - Plant of the Month December

The Spathiphyllum is a plant that is easy to care for and yet offers a sophisticated look. Even for those without a green thumb, this plant is a good choice: in fact, it signals itself when it is thirsty! Here are some tips to make sure your Spathiphum plant stays beautiful for as long as possible.

  • Light and placement: The Spathiphyllum likes indirect, bright light best. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can damage the leaves. An ideal spot is near a window with filtered light.
  • Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, but not soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings. Because the Spathiphyllum also survives in swamps in the wild, the plant can handle "wet feet" quite well but try not to make a habit of this. Forgot to water once? No problem! If the Spathiphyllum is thirsty, it will let you know by drooping its leaves. With a new splash of water in no time the Spathiphyllum will look beautiful again.
  • Temperature and humidity: The Spathiphyllum thrives at room temperature and moderate humidity. Try to avoid large temperature changes and do not place the plant near drafty areas. Spray the plant regularly with some water so that it feels at home in the room.
  • Nutrition: In summer, give the plant a small amount of plant food once a month. During summer, the Spoonplant is most active and therefore needs some extra help during this time.
  • Pruning: Remove dead leaves from the plant regularly to encourage the growth of new leaves. This not only keeps the plant beautiful but also helps maintain healthy air purification. Cut away the stem as low to the ground as possible for best effect.

Is the Spathiphyllum (Spoonplant) poisonous?

Yes, the Spathiphyllum is mildly poisonous. Like any plant, you are not supposed to eat the Spathiphyllum, but it is important to take extra care with this plant if you have pets. This is because allergic or irritant reactions can occur if poisonous plants are ingested. Therefore, put the Spathiphyllum around a spot where your pet cannot reach it as easily so you can still enjoy this air-purifying plant.

Versatility

The Spathiphyllum is known for its strong ability to remove pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde, and ammonia from the air. It is a natural air purifier that creates a healthier living environment and therefore fits perfectly into the Air So Pure range. Thanks to its beautiful white flowers (bracts), the Spathiphyllum is the perfect alternative to a bunch of flowers. Air-purifying and sustainable: you don't have to throw them away after a week.

The air-purifying Spathiphyllum is grown by our members Bestplant, Concorde Plants, KP Holland, Van der Voort Potplanten and Westland Plant. Is there only one kind of Spathiphyllum?
